Title: Steinberg Like Characters for Finite Simple Groups
Abstract:
Let \(G\) be a finite group. An ordinary character \(\chi\) of \(G\) vanishing on all \(p\)-singular elements with \(\chi(1)=|G|_p\) is called Steinberg like. We report about an almost complete classification of such characters for simple groups, the only open cases being the alternating groups with \(p = 2\), and some small rank groups of Lie type.
