Plotting a Great Circle on a Sphere   (2.11.00)

[down] [index] Edward Collett

I wish to plot a great circle on a sphere, that is, how do I plot an arc between one set of latitude and longitude coordinates and another set of latitude and longitude coordinates. For example, the arc (great circle) between New York City and London, Great Britain.

Also, is there by chance, a "package" for doing celestial navigation using MAPLE?

If you have to roll your own equations, here is a site on Great Circles.

Note: Plotting depends on projection. You plot a curve on a mercator map, a straight line on a great circle map. So, you also need a plotting routine for maps.
