Joint Block Seminar 2024 on Algebraic Number Theory

This years edition of the IRTG joint block seminar of the SFB TRR 195 Symbolic Tools in Mathematics and their Application will be about algebraic number theory. We will start with the very basics (what does it mean for a prime to split over a field extension?) and move on to topics such as lattices and orders. In the final two days we will give an introduction to modular forms and elliptic curves, which were the key ingredients on Andrew Wiles' celebrated proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. We will finish with the theory of complex multiplication of elliptic curves, which gives a characterisation of the maximal abelian extension of an imaginary quadratic number field, to which David Hilbert said "The theory of complex multiplication is not only the most beautiful part of mathematics but also of the whole of science."

Date: July 11 - 14, 2024.
