My SINGULAR
Songs
Since 2008 was a Year of Mathematics (at least in Germany), I decided to put two songs of mine about maths online.
I continue this tradition further on, having added the third song in German in 2010.
Singing songs is a good tradition betwen noncommutative algebraists...
JUNGE [Mathematiker] (orig: Die Ärzte)
Junge, du hast schon zu viel gelernt
Guck dir den Dieter an
der fährt schon einen Porsche.
Warum gehst du nicht
zu Onkel Werner in die Firma
der gibt dir Manager Job
wenn du ihn darum bittest,

Junge, und wieder diese Ringe
und wieder diese Moduln
und wenig bares Geld
[Was solln die Nachbarn sagen?]
Und dann noch Sommerschulen,
und auch Konferenzen
hast du noch nicht genug?
[Was solln die Nachbarn sagen?]

Nie kriegst du Honorare,
wir wissen nicht mehr weiter.

Junge, brich deiner Mutter nicht das Herz.
Es ist noch nicht zu spät,
dich bei der Firma zu bewerben.
Du hast dich doch früher
so für PC interessiert,
wäre das nichts für dich?
IT-Branche ist booming...

Junge, und wieder diese Gruppen
und dazu noch Halbgruppen
und diese Rechnerei
[Was solln die Nachbarn sagen?]
Du rechnest Charaktere,
und immer Gröbnerbasen
Die will doch keiner sehen!
[Was solln die Nachbarn sagen?]
So selten bist du auf Party
So selten mit den Mädels,
du denkst ja nicht daran!
[Was soll das Finanzamt sagen?]

Wo soll das alles enden?
Wir machen uns doch sorgen!

Und du warst so ein süsses Kind!(3x)
Du warst so süss...

Und immer deine Freunde,
Ihr seid doch alle Irre,
- macht Mathe rund um die Uhr,
[was solln die Nachbarn sagen?]
Denk an deine Zukunft,
denk an deine Eltern
willst du dass wir sterben?
My Noncommutative Blues

It started with easy examples
With numbers the world was ok
But then, in terms of matrices
AB is not always BA!

So they are non-commutative
And this mess I need to use
This was my first time in singing
My non-commutative blues

I wish to study geometry, say
Cohomology of coherent sheaves
I take BGG* correspondence
And what my poor eyes see?

It's again non-commutative theory
What I have to use
That's why I'm so often singing
My non-commutative blues

An innocent looking function
And a differential equation for it
We're searching a factorization
Oh my God! It is not unique!

It's again non-commutative structure
Which I have to use
That's why I'm so often singing
My noncommutative blues

*BGG, pronounced BiGeeGee, stays for Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand

God's Gonna Cut You Down ...
After Johnny Cash

You can conjugate for a long time,
Study orbits for a long time,
Take extensions for a long time,
Sooner or later groups will cut you down
Sooner or later groups will cut you down

You can factorize for a long time,
Homogenize for a long time,
Symmetrize for a long time,
Sooner or later they will cut your funds
Sooner or later they will cut your funds

You were studying for a long time,
Going deeper for quite a long time,
Getting degrees at least a couple of times,
And now these pigs say "we cut your funds!"
Now these pigs say "we cut your funds!"

We must solve more problems, more than before
We must be together ever than before
Since we know the symbolics of this poor world,
Sooner or later we will get'em down
Sooner or later we will get'em down
