Abstract:
In 1892, Otto Hölder wrote that it would be desirable to know all the finite simple groups. What did group theory look like at the time? When did the CFSG project really start, as a joint effort? When did the community think that this project neared completion, and why did they think so? Was this ``Big Mathematics''? And why do we care?
